Leaders And Health

By Cathy Ormon, Certified Health Coach

Leaders and health seem like two very separate subjects, seemingly with very little in common.  But the fact is – there is an undeniable and very important connection between them. In short, Leaders are strong movers and shakers, who direct their energy outward, largely for the benefit of others.  The dictionary defines ‘health’ as “the state of being free from illness or injury”.  In order to lead effectively, Leaders themselves need to have good, solid health.

Leaders have many roles, whether in their community, in government, in a family, in a small business or in a corporation.  They are visionaries, thinkers, planners and strategists, goal setters, motivators, and workers. They are policy makers. They are mentors and set a good example for others to follow. Their physical and mental energy is a crucial component necessary to move their vision from idea to completion, and to motivate others to participate in the vision and reach goals.

Leaders In Business

As an example, let’s talk about Leaders in business.  If a business Leader is in poor health, there is no energy to reach their goals and their business vision will be lost. They will not be able to carry out their plans and business strategies.  They will not be able to effectively motivate or mentor people in their organization, and it will be very difficult for them to work both ‘in their business’ and ‘on their business’. Without good physical and mental health, it will become very difficult to come up with creative solutions and answers in the event of business challenges.

Leaders eat veggiesSo how can a Leader make sure they have good, strong health, with energy and vitality to build their business?  The first and most important step is to make good health a top PRIORITY and a part of the plan!  By making good health a priority within the overall plan, a Leader will be setting a great example for others to follow, both in their family and in their organization.  It is a win/win situation and it accomplishes three things in their business:

  1. It ensures that they themselves will have enough personal energy and vitality to take their vision to completion.
  2. It ensures that all the people in their organization have the energy to effectively do their part and reach their goals successfully.
  3. It sets up a positive business or corporate environment that is people oriented, energetic and caring, which will translate into happy, healthy, positive, creative and productive employees.

Leaders And Good Health

If good health is a priority, how is that to be accomplished? What are the keys to maintaining good health?  The main key is: having a healthy, BALANCED LIFESTYLE!  Here are seven smaller keys to effectively maintain a balanced, healthy lifestyle:

  1. Eat a healthy, balanced diet of whole foods that feed the body and spirit. Include fresh vegetables and fruits, whole (minimally processed) grains, healthy protein, good fats, and clean water every day.  These are foods that feed us right from the cellular level, and give us energy to do everything we want and need to do!
  2. Eliminate or severely limit processed and refined foods in the diet. This includes fast foods, deep fried foods, manufactured foods, all soft drinks, sugary foods and candy, commercial baked goods, all junk foods, white flour, white sugar, lard, and chemicals.  These foods are empty calories that have no nutritional value at all. In fact, these foods fill us up and leave us nutritionally starving!  They actually rob us of energy and vitality because they are toxic.
  3. Get regular daily exercise.
  4. Take time to relax and reduce stress.
  5. Make time for family relationships and social connections.
  6. Have a healthy spiritual connection.
  7. Maintain a healthy and happy home environment.

The health and vitality of a Leader has a direct impact on the vitality of their business. A Leader that maintains a healthy lifestyle will be maintaining good health. They will have the energy that is required to take action, to plan and build the business of their dreams. Through their ideas, their energy and their example, they will be able to inspire and motivate others to be healthy, to be a part of their vision, and get the job done.  Their energy and vitality will also help them ‘weather the storms’ that inevitably come with building a business.
