Do you own your business? Or does your business own you?

Starting a new business or even maintaining an existing one can be a daunting task. Even if we went to business school there are so many things that we were not prepared for. There are the personal issues of employees, the unexpected costs that come up, the shortage in revenue that was not anticipated. Overhead is high, the market is tight, the season is too busy or too slow. Marketing seems ambiguous. What is actually working? When is there time to work “on” the business? We are already putting in 80 hours a week, where would we put in more time? And what would we do with that time anyway?

When I first started in business a few years ago I had a couple of good coaches that gave me some tips. Every day I am thankful for those tips because they saved my life and my business more times than I can count, but just about every day I see other business owners making grave errors. Here are just a few of the best tips I ever received.

The Top 5 Business Tips For 2014

  1. Make a plan. Stick to it. Measure it. Work on it again. Wash and re-rinse.
  2. You get 80% of your profits from 20% of what you are doing? What are you doing that is in that 20%? Figure it out, do it more, and pay other people a lesser wage to do the 80% that is not making you as much profit. Your time is worth too much to be spending it on menial tasks that others can be paid to do.
  3. Who are you? What are your values? What are the core values of your company? You will be happier if you stick to the values that you already are. Your clients will be happier if that is clearly identified. Then they can make a choice to join you or not to join you and your clientele  will be more loyal.
  4. Create a business plan that is a living, breathing document. Work on it regularly. Look at it often. Establish your course by taking on projects that fit within the context of that plan and say “no” to things that are not a good fit.
  5. Marketing is important. Invest heavily in marketing. Take time and money and put it into marketing and measure everything over 3, 6, and 12 months to see what is working. When you are busy and things are good do not stop the marketing. It is too late when the funnel is empty and there is no business coming through the door.
  6. Keep learning. I know I said 5 but honestly this one is pretty valuable, so I threw it in for FREE! As soon as we think we know what we are doing we stop learning and things come to a plateau at the very least. If we want to keep the numbers growing we have to remember that the growth is completely parallel to the growth that goes on inside of the leader of the company. Stretch yourself to learn more. I learned those things from business coaches. Business coaches have encouraged me to keep learning and keep growing. As a result we have not become stagnant. Our events are getting better and better.
